PRESS RELEASEJOSEPH RUGGIERO RELEASES CAMPAIGN COMMERCIAL ON TAXES

Joseph Ruggiero gave the press a sneak preview of a new campaign commercial today. The screening took place at the Hyde Park Democratic Committee headquarters.
This campaign commercial addresses the most contested issue in the campaign for county executive, taxes. The current county executive has been running on the claim of lowering taxes and this commercial shows what the numbers and county residents have to say about this issue. The commercial involves real county residents talking about their taxes and the increases over recent years. In the commercial, Ruggiero pledges to give voters straight talk on taxes in the face of the current administrations misleading messages.
Bill Steinhaus claims that the Dutchess County tax rate is the lowest it has been since the 1970's. The truth is that the tax rate went down because of reassessments across the county. By invoking the tax rate Steinhaus is trying to mask the fact that he has raised the tax levy by more then 40% in the past three years alone. The county share of property taxes went up 15% just last year. On top of this the "temporary" sales tax has been extended once again and on top of this the county instituted a new six million dollar mortgage tax. Talking about the tax rate is not an honest assessment of the actual monies paid by county residents.
"Double talk about taxes is insulting to the people of Dutchess County. People know their taxes have gone up and county government needs to be honest with people instead of twisting the numbers during an election year," said Ruggiero. "I believe there are real ways to keep taxes in check and I promise to make this one of my highest priorities if elected. Come January the people of this county can expect straight talk on taxes."
